Smokies News

Protecting what protects us.

The Great Smoky Mountains National Park is the heart of our region. It is not only a world-class natural treasure—it is one of the strongest economic engines in Appalachia. Millions of visitors come here each year to hike, camp, and experience these mountains, supporting small businesses, hospitality workers, outfitters, restaurants, and entire local economies.

What happens to the Smokies happens to all of us.

CALL TO ACTION!!

Protect Our Parks, in collaboration with Sevier County Indivisible, will be hosting a rally at the Sugarlands Visitors Center from 12pm-2pm on Saturday, April 18th.

Protect Our Parks Rally

Why the Park Matters

The Smokies are more than scenery. They provide:

  • Jobs and livelihoods across East Tennessee and Western North Carolina

  • Tourism revenue that keeps small towns alive

  • Clean air and water

  • Wildlife protection

  • A place of rest, healing, and connection for millions of people

When the park is strong, our communities are stronger.

What’s at Risk

In recent years, decisions made at the federal level have put increasing strain on our national parks, including the Smokies. Budget cuts, staffing shortages, and reduced support mean:

  • Fewer rangers, maintenance crews, and educators

  • Slower response to safety and environmental issues

  • Deferred trail and facility maintenance

  • Increased pressure on already overworked staff

  • Greater risk to wildlife, ecosystems, and visitor safety

When parks are underfunded, it isn’t just the land that suffers—it’s the people who depend on it.

Why This Is a Community Issue

For Appalachia, the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is not optional—it is essential.

When the park is neglected:

  • Tourism declines

  • Local businesses struggle

  • Workers lose hours or jobs

  • Infrastructure falls behind

  • Our region’s long-term sustainability is threatened

Protecting the Smokies is about protecting our future.
